Minnesota, MN — The Vikings’ comeback against the Eagles was overshadowed by a controversial catch in the final moments of the game. Carson Wentz found T.J. Hockenson in the end zone to narrow the gap to two points.
After review, the replay center in New York overturned the decision, ruling that Hockenson did not maintain control of the ball upon hitting the ground. Hockenson protested vehemently and asserted that he “controlled the ball throughout the play.”
According to Hockenson, two members of Bill Vinovich’s officiating crew told him that it was a valid catch and touchdown, even after it was overturned. Specifically, Bill Vinovich himself and his associate Scott Walker both admitted that the overturning of the call was “ridiculous” and that “the Vikings were robbed of the victory.”
“What did Hockenson say?” He said he no longer understands the catch rule anymore when the “clear evidence to overturn” did not appear in his perception. An outraged voice echoed in the hallway: “THE VIKINGS WERE ROBBED OF THE VICTORY.”
If the TD had stood, the Vikings would have had a chance to tie with a 2-point conversion with about three minutes left. Will Reichard had previously converted a 59-yard kick, increasing tactical options at the end of the game.
Nevertheless, the NFL’s replay process allows for review of all scoring plays and overturning when there is clear video evidence. The result remains unchanged, and Minnesota must swallow the regret before heading into a short week against the Los Angeles Chargers.
